2012-13 School Year Calendar Released
At its meeting on January 17, 2012, the Spotswood Board of Education approved the district calendar for the 2012/13 school year.
Appleby Drama Club Flapjack Fundraiser

School Board Candidacy Information
The Spotswood School District has announced it has information available for citizens interested in running for a vacant seat on the board of education.
The Spotswood Board of Education will have 2 vacancies in the April 17 Annual School Election, Robert Green, Business Administrator/Board Secretary announced today. A full term on the school board runs for three years.
Candidates must file a nominating petition with the local school board in order to get their name on the ballot for the Annual School Election. The current deadline to submit the nominating petition is 4 p.m. Monday, February 27, 2012. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, 2012.
Prospective school board candidates can obtain a “School Board Candidate Kit” online at www.njsba.org or at the Spotswood Board of Education office located in the rear of Spotswood High School. The School Board Candidate Kit includes a nominating petition, information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included in the kit.

Spotswood Public Schools Kindergarten Registration
All children who will be five years old on or before October 1, 2012 who reside in Spotswood or Helmetta will be eligible to register for Kindergarten.

Spotswood Public Schools Preschool Pre-Registration
Registration for all children living in Spotswood and Helmetta who will be eligible for preschool in September 2012 will be held on February 7, 8 and 9, 2012 at Schoenly School. Pre-registration does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Preschool enrollment will be considered after pre-registration statistics are finalized and state funding is determined.

Helmetta Redevelopment Meeting
Dear Spotswood and Helmetta residents,
Please be advised that there will be a special meeting of the Helmetta Planning Board regarding the proposed Helme Mill Redevelopment Area next Wednesday, January 11, 2012. The Spotswood Borough Council and Board of Education will present testimony regarding the potentially detrimental impact of this redevelopment to the Spotswood School District, as well as to the taxpayers of both Spotswood and Helmetta. Members of the public will also be afforded an opportunity to comment on this topic.
The meeting will be held on January 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Helmetta Municipal Building, 60 Main Street, Helmetta. Whether or not you have attended prior meetings regarding this topic, we ask that you take time out of your schedule to be there, as this will be a final opportunity to present information to the Helmetta Planning Board. Please pass this message on to anyone you know who will be affected by this decision.
Please note that due to limited parking at the Helmetta Municipal Building, we will be running a shuttle to the meeting from the Spotswood High School front parking lot at 6:45 p.m. If you are interested in taking the shuttle, please send an email to spotswoodboe@spotswood.k12.nj.us or call 732-723-2241 no later than Tuesday, January 10.

In order to establish a school environment that promotes a safe learning atmosphere all district schools will participate in monthly security and fire drills throughout the school year.
In the event that you see large groups of students walking, they will be participating in the mandatory state drill.
Each drill makes our students safer and better prepared in the event of a real emergency.

Middlesex County Disaster Resource Center (DRC)
On behalf of Freeholder Blanquita B. Valenti, this notice is to inform you of the recently opened Middlesex County Disaster Resource Center (DRC). The DRC is housed at the former offices of the East Brunswick Parks Department, 334 Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick and is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, 7 days a week.
The Disaster Resource Center has representatives from FEMA, the Small Business Administration and the American Red Cross, as well as staff from the Middlesex County Office of Human Services. Our goal is to assist residents who apply for any assistance in navigating myriad local services that may be available to supplement those offered by federal and state agencies.

The Spotswood Public Schools are proud to celebrate the achievement of Spotswood High School for being named #3 statewide in our District Factor Group which represents 83 school districts. In an Inside Jersey article appearing in the Star-Ledger, Spotswood High School was recognized as one of “New Jersey’s Top-Performing High Schools” based on our students’ scores on the Grade 11 High School Proficiency Assessment. SHS students performed at high levels in mathematics, reading, and writing after having completed effective programs of test preparation imbedded within strong curricula. We are very proud of our faculty, support staff and students accomplishments!
